Our story

Why we wrote this book.

Dirt & Pages started as a shared notebook between two writers who grew up gardening with grandparents — one in the Blue Ridge, one on a Brooklyn fire escape — and kept comparing notes on what actually worked and what was garden folklore.

The Growing Book is the long form of those notes. We wrote it because most garden writing online is either slick and empty, or sprawling and hard to follow. We wanted a small book — 180 pages — that reads like a single voice, in the order you'd actually use it, with the honest bits about what goes wrong included.

Every plant and every technique in the book has been grown by us, sometimes badly the first time. That's often where the useful part comes from.
